The Diocese of Olympia Celebrates Juneteenth
Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom. It commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, TX, learned of the Emancipation Proclamation, which formally ended their enslavement.
This year, on June 21, the Black/African American Circle hosted a Juneteenth celebration at St Mark’s Cathedral. African drumming and dancing by VCBynum Arts & Education and by the Awal Alhassan & Sohoyini West African Dance Company brought an international flair to the celebration. Drawing from his Kenyan heritage, The Rev. Paul Karume, vicar of Goshen All Saints Church in Tacoma, preached on the theme “Don’t be afraid. God has got your back.”

Call to Support Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza City
On June 5, Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza City suffered the sixth destructive attack from the Israeli military – in addition to a father and son seeking surgery, three journalists were killed. Thirty others were wounded, including four hospital staff. A beacon of hope and resilience in one of the world’s most troubled places, Al Ahli Arab Hospital, located in Gaza City and operated by the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem, stands as a critical lifeline in the midst of the catastrophic, never-ending humanitarian crisis.

Is Your Parish Musician Unfamiliar with Episcopal Worship and Music?
The Bishop’s Commission on Liturgy and the Arts is prepared to offer workshops for parish musicians unfamiliar with Episcopal worship and music. In order to do this, it would help to know the parishes that would encourage musicians to participate in this free, morning-long workshop.
Based on responses, the Commission will secure one or more locations and then advertise dates and times – most likely on a Saturday morning this summer.
If this interests you, send an email to Fr. Samuel Torvend at torvensa@plu.edu with MUSIC in the subject line. We need the name and location of your parish. And we need to hear from parishes by Friday, July 11.
Thank you.

- Faith communities that embody “text, soul, and culture” and/or use innovative formats for scriptural engagement in community.
