Bishop Jaech’s letter to Gov Inslee about re-opening churches

May 26, 2020.
Dear Pastors, Deacons, and Congregations,

In response to President Trump’s statement last Friday that all churches who wish should re-open immediately for worship, I would like to say that I continue to recommend the same steps that I communicated to you last week.  Namely, I recommend that each pastor should gather a leadership team that carefully thinks through all of the necessities and implications for safely re-opening a church facility for in-person gatherings.  This plan should conform to the state and local regulations in your area and should be based on the most current medical advice.

I am attaching below a letter from the three ELCA bishops in Washington, Bishop Kuempel, Bishop Bryan Wee, and myself, that we have sent to Governor Inslee affirming the measured, cautious approach that he is also advocating. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Blessings to you as we approach Pentecost. May God’s fire of love, grace, and justice fill you!

Bishop Rick Jaech
