Dear Friends, Welcome to an updated “Across the Diocese” newsletter. We’ve updated the look and feel, the included content, and the frequency of these emails in a desire to both increase important communication with you while also streamlining what we send in order to make these emails more engaging and informative. I hope you’ll take the time to read through and check out this new format. We’re in the midst of Advent and also “the holiday season.” More and more companies have created Advent Calendar offerings—running December 1-24, which rarely aligns with the Church Calendar for Advent. Their desire is to capitalize on the counting down to Christmas for more sales on top of those things which we’ll have under the tree. And then come December 26, secular Christmas will be over, Christmas Candy will be half off, and stores will be working desperately hard to get out the Valentine’s Day merch. Which is what happens when we turn Christmas into a capitalistic enterprise. My hope for all of us is to embrace a counter-cultural posture. To try to focus our gifts more on presence—prioritizing giving experiences with those we love, recognizing that our time and relationship building is of higher importance than most material things. An outing to a local theater or museum perhaps, or giving a gift card for a local coffee shop with the promise of making a date to enjoy it together. Or when giving a game or puzzle to someone, setting aside time to enjoy it with them. And there’s no better time to enjoy those types of gifts than during Christmastide. While decorations will start coming down on December 26, we can make those 11 additional days of Christmas a time of joy, of sharing our love with those who are important to us, and making memories. Because the arrival of the Christ Child is to bring great joy for all people. Let’s take our part in both giving and receiving joy this year. Advent Blessings, |
